Everything I Know About Business I Learned From Running

Palos Verdes Marathon in San Pedro
Palos Verdes Marathon in San Pedro
I have BJG to thank for providing the motivation needed to keep going during 13.1 miles over the weekend. Well maybe not motivation so much as the impending humiliation of quitting and admitting failure. We set SMART goals every year with our supervisor. Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant and Time sensitive goals. One of my personal goals this year was to beat the time from my first ever half marathon last year. While I didn’t achieve this goal (made it in about the same time, ok a little bit longer) I none-the-less completed my second marathon at the Palos Verdes Half Marathon and I am in better physical and mental shape because of the efforts I have made to train and eat healthy in preparation.

Harsch Greening Project

Hacienda West in Pleasanton, CA
Hacienda West
Over the next month BJG will be “greening” Harsch’s tenant improvement specifications. BJG will be writing the specifications so that future improvements in the Hacienda West and Hacienda Lakes properties are sustainable. This will include specifying a local sourced carpet that also has a recycled content, as well as is recyclable. Paints will be low VOC. Countertops will be Greenguard certified to include minimal air pollutants. Door options will include wood that is forested to meet FSC standards for forest management.

Beyond material specifications the contractor will be required to minimize waste sent to the landfills, which has become common practice in this region, so to take it further we will encourage reusing existing equipment and materials. The contractors staff will also not be allowed to smoke in or around the premises to promote air quality.

Green Teams Presentation

I had the wonderful opportunity to speak on a panel of green team members at a Sustainable Silicon Valley event on April 30th. I enjoyed putting together a presentation on BJG’s efforts to green our company. It made me realize how much we have accomplished the last few years.

Our team was formed organically by two of our staff members who had a passion to change the way we did business. They started small. Double sided printing. Carpool to work week. Composting. These initiatives grew into our formal green team and company mission statement “We passionately enrich our environment through responsive design”. Our company is very fortunate that our president is passionate about the environment and he is an active and supportive participant of our green team.

Aesthetics

Hi BJG Bloggers,

As some of us may know by now, I am not always sure about the concept of passion, nor am I always sure exactly of its meaning and purpose. I am sure about other concepts though - for example, indulgence. In recent years I have engaged passionately both the art and practice of Indulgence.

Now for a person hooked on indulgence, its pretty difficult to do without an occasional hit. So, by means of our Blog, I would like to ask my work mates to indulge me a bit thus allowing me a bit of my own indulgence.

Improvements to the Blog

We are constantly trying to make improvements to the blog. One improvement coming soon is an “On the Boards” section. This will be the place where we document many of our upcoming projects.

Other improvements include:

  • Subscribe by email functionality. You, the reader, will be able to get notified via email of the latest blog posts.
  • Better author pages. This way, you can get to know the authors of our blog, and even interact with them through commenting.
  • I have always wanted to make a fun 404 page. Watch for that!

Are there any improvements you would like to see? Layout, fonts, different functions, etc.? Let us know in the comments.

Sony Reader

Sony Reader
Sony Reader
When I make a large purchase, I need to justify it to myself . Purchasing the Sony Reader was easy to justify. It’s obviously a “green” choice – no paper books to purchase, no gas wasted transporting books to and from locations, etc. For a more personal benefit, it eases concern about how much my luggage weighs when I’m going on a trip; and the fact that the font size can be enlarged only gave it more appeal.

If you’re not familiar with the Sony Reader, you can download up to 160 books on the portable device. It weighs about nine ounces and is about the size of a large greeting card. You purchase the books from the on-line store; the prices could be cheaper, but they are certainly more reasonable than a book store. The battery lasts quite awhile because the display is not backlit. That also makes it easier to read and you get about 7500 page turns with each charge.

Our Core Values: Encourage Initiative

At the last company meeting, Pete asked me to give a brief presentation on one of our core values. Our core values are:

  1. Encourage initiative
  2. Take responsibility
  3. Honor abilities
  4. Promote growth
  5. Advocate responsible design
  6. Take pride
  7. Engage with community
  8. Achieve financial success
  9. Reward performance
  10. Have fun

I chose to expand upon Encourage Initiative. This core value is especially close to me. Encourage Initiative gives every BJG employee carte blanche to be an entrepreneur within BJG.

By taking initiative, we can define BJG however we want.  Interior design, BIM, sustainable design, to name a few, all came to BJG through employees taking initiative.  I love this core value!

I have included the presentation below. Let me know what you think.

Engaged Employee for May

Kara is the Engaged Employee for May.  She not only designs sustainably, but brings that into her life away from BJG.  She is an advocate for the environment.  Also, thanks for Marshall for designing an awesome poster.
