Talk/Dress Like a Pirate

Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day. Here at BJG, we like to have fun, so we have proclaimed it Dress Like a Pirate Day as well. We had a little competition in the Reno office to see who could be most pirate-y. Needless to say, Kara won, however, fun was had by all.

The Importance of Student Design Competitions

I surf over to the UNR website every couple of days. I like to stay in the loop on the big UNR news.

Today, when stopped by, I read that the UNR Concrete Canoe team took first place at the ASCE Mid Pacific Conference at UC Davis. (Sorry, there were a lot of links in that last sentence. As a new blogger I am trying to balance giving information with not making a whole sentence hyperlinked.)

First off, congratulations to the crew at UNR. This is quite an accomplishment. The Mid Pacific region has one of the toughest competitors in the nation: UC Berkeley. They have represented the region 15 times at nationals. Of those 15 finishes, the have only once appeared outside the top 10. They are only one of four schools with back to back first place finishes and the only school to do this twice. All other amazing stats regarding Berkeley can be found here.

Brace Yourself for the 2006 IBC

The 2006 International Building Code (IBC) is coming and for some jurisdictions it is already here. Las Vegas has already seen its adoption; Northern Nevada and California are close behind. BJG has studied up and is providing you with the following story of the 2006 IBC and your building’s braced frame particularly with respect to industrial buildings.

Not so long ago, the concentric braced frame was a thing of simplicity and reliability. Inexpensive to implement and relatively simple to design, it was an important system of choice for economical structures where the architectural floor plan could accommodate the brace layout. Several typical braced frame configurations are shown immediately below and will be discussed later where appropriate.

A typical braced frame “works” by transferring horizontal forces to foundations by pushing or pulling on the diagonal steel member. See Figure 8 for an illustration. Engineers have tried many varieties of braced frames over the centuries. Some have performed well, some have performed poorly and some have been “just ok”. Much of what we have learned has been by seeing what does and does not work in earthquakes. (more…)

April Engaged Employee

April’s Engaged Employees of the Month are all of the BJG employees that helped out at our first annual Easter Egg Hunt at Bartley Ranch in Reno, NV.  They took their own time to help coordinate and run this amazing community outreach event that brought families together and gave dozens of children joy.

Good job BJGers!

Engaged Employee for May

Kara is the Engaged Employee for May.  She not only designs sustainably, but brings that into her life away from BJG.  She is an advocate for the environment.  Also, thanks for Marshall for designing an awesome poster.
